Abstract
Atmospheric aerosols, of natural or anthropogenic origin, are important players in the earth’s climate system through their interaction with clouds and radiation. On the other hand, aerosols may affect the air quality and visibility and thus the human health and security. The effects of aerosols depend on aerosol type and on their optical and microphysical properties. Remote sensing techniques based on surface and satellite active and passive measurements are used in order to characterize aerosols. This webinar will introduce the principles of active and passive remote sensing, the aerosol properties relevant for climate and some results of aerosol properties (in the atmospheric column and vertical profiles) obtained through remote sensing measurements.
