Seminário interdisciplinar de investigação sobre Paisagem e Património III: "Examples and Cultural Contexts of Ringing Rocks and Lithophones"

Orador: Paul Devereux

Moderação: Leonor Rocha e Paulo Simões Rodrigues

An overview is given of the ‘Landscape & Perception’ project (www.landscape- perception.com) being conducted under the auspices of the Royal College of Art, London, by Jon Wozencroft and Paul Devereux. This is an audio-visual field study of the Carn Menyn area of the Preseli Hills of south-west Wales, the origin landscape of the Stonehenge bluestones. It will be shown that the area is rich in sonic rocks. Some further examples of ringing rocks and lithophones elsewhere in the ancient world will be given, with brief references to their cultural contexts.

Brief biographical note:

Trained as an artist (fine art, painter), Paul Devereux is a co-founder and Managing Editor of the academic Routledge publication, Time & Mind – The Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture (www.tandfonline.com/rtam), and a research associate of the Royal College of Art. He has written many articles and papers, and also 28 books, his latest being Sacred Geography (Gaia/Octopus, 2010). His main research area is archaeoacoustics.
